CC Spokane volleyball coach Matlock retires

The Spokesman-Review

Irene Matlock announced Wednesday night that she is stepping down as the head volleyball coach at Community Colleges of Spokane.

Matlock, who has been at CSS for the past 19 years, went public with her decision during the Sasquatch’s annual fall sports banquet.

Her 2004 team finished 28-15 and won the East Division of the NWAAC with a 10-2 record. The Sasquatch finished fifth in the NWAACC tournament.

Matlock’s CCS teams won four NWAACC titles. She has taken teams to the NWAACC championship tournament every year she’s been at the school. She was named the Eastern Region coach of the year six times and the NWAACC coach of the year four times.

Matlock, who coached Sandpoint High School to four consecutive Idaho A-1 state championships (1982-85) before taking over at CCS, retires with a record of 715-241, having picked up her milestone 700th win during the Spokane Crossover Tournament earlier this fall.

Women’s basketball

Whitworth College received double-doubles from Tiffany Speer and Sarah Shogren and held off a late Eastern Oregon University rally in a 76-68 non-conference win at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Speer had team highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds as the Pirates raised their record to 3-0. Shogren chipped in with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while freshmen Holly Ridings and Emily Hendrickson had nine points apiece.

Mt. Spokane grad Heidi Horobioski led all scorers with 26 points for Eastern Oregon (2-3).

Cross country

Washington State University senior Danny Wolf was named to the All-Pacific-10 Conference men’s second team, the conference announced from Walnut Creek, Calif.

Wolf, of Reno, Nev., placed ninth at last month’s Pac-10 Championships in San Francisco.

Baseball

Glenn Dishman, who came within one out of a perfect game while pitching a no-hitter for the Spokane Indians in 1993, has been hired as the pitching coach of the Columbus (Ga.) Catfish of the South Atlantic League. The Catfish are a Class A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
