Big Ben comes through
Rookie quarterback Ben Roethlisberger extended both his and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ winning streak to 10 games by engineering a last-minute drive Sunday night in Jacksonville, Fla., to set up a 37-yard field goal by Jeff Reed with 18 seconds left that gave the visiting Steelers a 17-16 win over the Jaguars.
The drive, the kind pulled off by the best quarterbacks, covered 56 yards in six plays after Josh Scobee made a 36-yard field goal with 1:55 left to give the Jaguars the lead.
Then Roethlisberger was 3 of 4 for 39 yards on the winning drive, and the one incompletion was a spike after he calmly let the clock run down to avoid giving the Jaguars much time for a march of their own.
He finished the night 14 of 17 for 221 yards and two touchdowns.
Jacksonville (6-6) had one last shot after a 19-yard completion from Byron Leftwich to Jimmy Smith, which gave Scobee a shot at a 60-yarder. It fell just short and wide right.
Bengals 27, Ravens 26
Carson Palmer capped his finest day in the NFL with an appropriate ending to an improbable comeback.
Down by 17 points entering the fourth quarter, the Bengals pierced the proud defense of the Ravens for 24 points over the final 15 minutes and escaped with a victory in Baltimore.
Shayne Graham kicked a 24-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Bengals their first win in Baltimore in eight tries since 1996.
Matt Stover’s fourth field goal put Baltimore up 26-24 with 1:42 left, but Palmer calmly drove Cincinnati into position for the winning kick, covering 60 yards in seven plays.
Bears 24, Vikings 14
Chad Hutchinson, who was surfing in California a little more than two months ago, made his first Chicago start a memorable one, throwing three TD passes to lead the Bears past visiting Minnesota.
Daunte Culpepper, completing 70 percent of his passes entering the game, was intercepted three times — he had only seven all season before Sunday —and the Vikings were held scoreless in the second half.
Buccaneers 27, Falcons 0
Making one of the NFL’s most exciting players look ordinary for much of the day, the Bucs dominated Michael Vick and Atlanta in Tampa, Fla., to keep the first-place Falcons from clinching the NFC South championship.
Simeon Rice became the 22nd player in league history to reach 100 sacks, getting Vick on the ground twice and forcing a fumble to set up a touchdown. Rice boosted his career total to 101 in nine seasons.
Derrick Brooks also made it a miserable day for the Atlanta quarterback, tipping an ill-advised pass that Dwight Smith intercepted in the end zone and sacking Vick twice, one to force a fumble that led to a field goal.
Bills 42, Dolphins 32
Drew Bledsoe threw four touchdown passes, and the visiting Bills forced seven turnovers to maintain their late-season surge by beating Miami.
A.J. Feeley threw three touchdown passes, all in the first 12 1/2 minutes for Miami. He also had a hand in six turnovers, including an interception returned 20 yards for the game’s final score.
Patriots 42, Browns 15
Bethel Johnson returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and Corey Dillon rushed for 98 yards and two TDs before halftime as the Patriots cruised in a laugher over the Browns in Cleveland.
Randall Gay ran in a fumble 41 yards for a TD in the second half as the Pats (11-1) continued their best start in franchise history and won for the 26th time in 27 regular-season games.
Colts 51, Titans 24
Peyton Manning threw three touchdown passes, Edgerrin James ran for two more and Indianapolis returned a blocked field goal for another TD as the Colts routed visiting Tennessee and moved closer to clinching the AFC South.
Indianapolis won its fifth straight by tying the NFL record for most consecutive 40-point games with four. Only two other teams have done it — the 2000 St. Louis Rams and the 1960 San Diego Chargers.
Manning still threw for 317 yards in the first half when receivers Brandon Stokley and Marvin Harrison each topped 100 yards. Manning finished 25 for 33 for 425 yards with two interceptions as he moved to within four TD passes of Dan Marino’s single-season record (48) before being pulled early in the fourth quarter.
Jets 29, Texans 7
Chad Pennington, back after missing three games, directed three second-half touchdown drives and Curtis Martin added his seventh 100-yard game of the season to help New York defeat Houston in East Rutherford, N.J.
Martin had 134 yards on 23 carries, going over the 1,300 yard mark on the season. He needs 26 yards to become the fifth back to reach 13,000 yards in a career. In all, the Jets had 36 carries for 210 yards on the ground.
Chiefs 34, Raiders 27
Trent Green completed 14 of 15 passes after halftime for 229 of his 340 yards and hit Eddie Kennison for a tiebreaking 70-yard touchdown with 2:04 left as Kansas City topped the Raiders in Oakland, Calif.
Running back Larry Johnson scored two second-half touchdowns for the Chiefs.
Raiders quarterback Kerry Collins connected with Ronald Curry for two of his three touchdown passes and was 27 of 41 for 343 yards without an interception.
Redskins 31, Giants 7
Washington broke a three-game losing streak and broke the 20-point barrier for the first time since Joe Gibbs returned as coach, ending their longest such drought since the 1930s, in a win over New York in Landover, Md.
Clinton Portis rushed for 148 yards and a score for Washington.
Panthers 32, Saints 21
John Kasay kept Carolina’s late-run for a playoff berth on track with six field goals in a road win over New Orleans.
