Katus’ pin propels G-Prep

Chris Katus’ third-round pin of Thomas Montague lifted Gonzaga Prep to a 40-36 victory over North Central in the Greater Spokane League wrestling opener at North Central.

NC scored a half-dozen pins and took the lead after consecutive pins at 119 and 125 pounds.

Katus won the 130-pound finale with 24 seconds remaining in the match.

University 61, Lewis and Clark 12: The Titans dominated at LC, earning six pins and scoring a pair of technical falls. Cory Fish, the state champion at 103 last year, jumped up to 119 and pinned Trevor Powell in the second round. His brother, Chase Fish, a state alternate a year ago at 103, pinned Steve Cooley in the first round at 112. Jeremy Montang, third at state at 130 last year, scored a technical fall at 145. LC’s Nate Powell, third in state at 119 last year, scored an 8-2 decision over Mike Malsam. … Mt. Spokane 56, Cheney 17: The Wildcats won seven straight matches, from 135 through 189, to earn the win at home, led by Braun Murray’s pin of Stefan Swenson at 160. Cheney’s Blake Risk, third at last year’s Class 3A state tournament at 125, scored a technical fall over Wes Reasor at 130. … East Valley 59, Shadle Park 9: The three-time defending GSL champions dropped just two matches against the host Highlanders. Freshman Clete Hanson earned a pin at 160, and his brother, Matt, a senior, scored a technical fall at 140. Returning state placer Jared Imes scored a pin at 135 for the Knights. … Central Valley 58, Ferris 16: So much for brotherly love. CV, coached by John Owen, thumped the host Saxons, coached by younger brother Tim, by scoring seven pins. The Bears won three consecutive matches three times in the match. Senior Geoff Palachuk, a state alternate last year, earned a decision at 135. Defending state champion Kyle Yonago earned a major decision at 140 for Ferris.

Boys basketball

Moscow 41, Pullman 31: The Bears took a 16-4 lead after one quarter at home and never looked back, earning a non-league win over the Greyhounds. Jake Lefors scored 13 points to lead Moscow. Brad Herrenbruck and John Mosman of the Bears pulled down seven rebounds apiece.

Girls basketball

Post Falls 33, Newport 31: The Trojans earned a non-league win over the visiting Grizzlies by holding off a 14-7 fourth-quarter rally. Kandice McArthur’s nine points led Post Falls. Maria Barranco’s 15 paced the Grizzlies.

Gymnastics

Mead swept the top three all-around spots to earn a GSL win in a three-way meet at University, beating the host Titans and North Central. The Panthers scored 171.91 points. U-Hi was second at 160.8 and NC scored 150.15. Ashley Dotson earned all-around honors, edging teammate Kaila Evanoff, a transfer from Shadle Park. U-Hi’s Kayla McGahey, the regional champion on the uneven bars last year, scored a 9.05 to win that event.
