NC hires new coordinator; Tissue to coach girls soccer

North Central has a new activities coordinator and new girls soccer coach.

Travis Schulhauser has moved from Havermale Center where he was assistant principal of curriculum, to NC to become vice principal for activities.

His first hire is Whitworth Hall of Fame athlete Jennifer Tissue as the Indians girls soccer coach.

Tissue, a former professional women’s soccer player, had been a teacher and boys soccer coach at Valley Christian School for the past two seasons, last year guiding the Panthers into the regionals.

“I loved that place. Leaving was probably one of the hardest decisions in my life,” said Tissue. “I prayed about it for a long time, then all the openings in District 81 opened up and I didn’t want any regrets so I decided to give it a shot.”

She’ll teach mathematics at NC and, when the school opened Tim Cox’s coaching position, Tissue was chosen over Cox. Cox had gone 23-51 in the GSL in seven seasons as girls coach, including a best-ever 7-6 record in league last fall. He will remain the boys soccer coach.

“I think we looked at this as an opportunity to take advantage of some of the skills Jennifer has,” said Schulhauser. “(We) wanted to give her the opportunity and opened it up. We’re excited about having her.”

Tissue said she’ll coach no different than she has in youth soccer and at Valley Christian.

“I loved coaching the boys, but I feel my calling is the girls,” she said. “Being a woman and playing at the level I played, I have a lot to offer young ladies.”

Tissue graduated from Shadle Park in 1993 and Whitworth College in 1997. Six years later she was inducted into the Whitworth Heritage Gallery Hall of Fame for soccer and basketball.

She had assisted at Whitworth for three years and played soccer professionally in Boston in 2001 before beginning her teaching career.

Schulhauser graduated from Central Valley High School, attended Washington State University and graduated from Eastern Washington University before beginning his education career.

He started with the Spokane School District at Cross Walk before taking on duties at Havermale, the last 2 ½ years in administration.

Taking the NC job, he said, “is a way for me to learn a comprehensive system being part of a larger school. It’s one more step in being a principal one day.”

Schulhauser replaces Ed Fisher as activities vice principal. Fisher, also a Shadle Park and EWU graduate, was a successful football coach for 23 years at South Kitsap before spending the last seven years in the NC administrative post.

“I look at this as kind of a new learning experience for me,” said Schulhauser . “I think Ed did a fantastic job of moving NC toward being competitive in sports. I want to help continue that.”
