S. Perry Street Faire this weekend

While food, music, arts, crafts and a traditional small-town parade will be the main draws at this weekend’s fifth annual South Perry Street Faire, fairgoers also will get the chance to take a look at the close-knit neighborhood’s improvements. Trees have been planted, old-fashioned street lamps installed and sidewalks widened, which is all part of the South Perry Business Association’s plan to make the neighborhood more attractive.

“This will be a festival that shows the South Perry district is an even better place to live, work, shop and play,” said Craig Heimbigner, event coordinator. “This year’s fair will continue the revitalization of the South Perry district neighborhood. It is our goal to sustain this community and build bridges across cultures by opening avenues for shared dialogue and creating a sense of shared space.”

The fair will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, running south on South Perry from Ninth to 11th avenues, turning west on 11th until Ivory Street. It will end next to Grant Park. A reviewing stand will announce the entries, and judges will award prizes for best community entry, best family entry, best animal entry and crowd favorite. Children, bicyclists or anyone with pets who are not signed up but would like to be a part of the parade should call 534-1187, or just show up, Heimbigner said.

Classic cars also will be featured in the parade and parked for viewing throughout the fair. Arts and crafts booths will be set up on South Perry and at the park.

Music will be performed all day at The Shop, 924 S. Perry. Sidhe, Jazz Attack, Trainwreck, Coeurimba, Mad Mama Moon, Milonga, and The Agitators will perform. A beer garden will be set up at The Shop.

The Kindred Spirits outdoor quilt show also is jumping into the act. The show will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, next door to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery at 1015 E. Ninth Ave. It will feature quilts, music, fabric, and craft vendors. Proceeds from the show, sponsored by the Spokane Valley Quilters Guild, will benefit the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery.

The South Perry Summer Theater also will kick off Saturday night. Free movies will be shown outside the Altamont Pharmacy and be visible from The Shop’s parking lot. Some seating will be provided, but people are advised to bring lawn or lounge chairs. The other Saturday night movies will be shown July 24, 31 and Aug. 7, 14, 21 and 28.
