Weekend shootings leave 1 dead

Kristen Kromer Staff writer

Spokane police are investigating three separate shooting incidents that occurred early Sunday and resulted in one death. A fourth shooting led to one arrest.

At 12:40 a.m., officers responded to a call from 4108 N. Monroe. In a news release, police spokesman Dick Cottam said the homeowner’s girlfriend was at the house and opened the door to two men, who immediately confronted the homeowner. The homeowner began struggling with one of the men, and a gunshot was fired. The intruder fell to the floor, dead. The second man ran from the house.

Detectives have identified the dead man, whose name will be released once relatives have been notified, and they have the name of a person of interest. Detectives have not indicated why the two men went to the house or if there was a relationship among those involved, Cottam said.

The man who fled was described as a stocky black man, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, wearing a blue scarf.

While officers were investigating that shooting, others responded to a call from the 1300 block of North Madison. A man had been hit in the neck by a pellet fired from a shotgun. The wound was not life-threatening, Cottam said.

A yellow truck was seen leaving the area, and police stopped such a vehicle nearby a few minutes later. They interviewed several young men, and one was arrested on unrelated warrants. Police found a shotgun in the truck and are continuing to investigate the case.

Two minutes later, shots were reported in the 5500 block of East Commerce, but no one was hit, Cottam said. That case also is being investigated.

Anyone with information about any of the shootings is asked to call Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.

In another incident about 2 a.m., two men suffered minor injuries when they were shot from a passing pickup.

The driver of the vehicle that was hit told officers he and four of his friends were in his girlfriend’s Chevrolet Geo Tracker westbound on Indiana near Northwest Boulevard.

He said a pickup pulled up beside them and the people inside started shouting at them. After a few blocks, a passenger in the pickup leaned out a window and fired a gun at the Tracker, shattering the windshield and marring the paint, Cottam said.

The driver was not hit, but two passengers were injured, neither seriously. They were taken to an area hospital for treatment.

After the victims contacted police, officers soon spotted the 1970s cream-colored Chevrolet pickup the victims had described. They stopped the vehicle, and the victims identified one of the four people in the truck as the alleged shooter.

Officers found a shotgun in the truck along with several shotgun shells and arrested Tommy Lee Agullo, 19, Cottam said. Agullo was booked into jail on two counts of first-degree assault and for an unrelated warrant for theft. He has two felony convictions for burglary and malicious mischief, so his alleged possession of the shotgun would be illegal.
