Neighbors to meet for Night Out Against Crime
Neighborhoods throughout Spokane will join thousands of communities to participate in the 21st annual National Night out Against Crime.
Spokane was honored for the fourth year in a row as a National Award Winner for its participation in this community crime, drug and violence prevention program.
The program is organized by the National Association of Town Watch, with assistance from the U.S. Department of Justice, and is sponsored locally by Spokane COPS.
More than 10,000 communities across the United States, with a total of over 33 million people, are expected to participate in the event.
The purpose of National Night Out is to heighten crime and drug prevention education; generate awareness and participation in local anti-crime resources; strengthen neighborhood spirit and community policing partnerships and send a message to criminals: Watch out. Neighborhoods are organized and have the resources to fight back.
A kickoff rally will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 2 at Riverfront Park.
Residents throughout Spokane are encouraged to spend time outside with neighbors, police and community service providers between 5 and 9 p.m. on Aug. 3.
If you want to host an event, stop by your local COPS Substation and RSVP to schedule your event. Also let them know about any special visitors you would like to stop by, such as COPS volunteers, patrol officers, neighborhood resource officers, Spokane Police Department chiefs, captains and lieutenants, city officials, firefighters or McGruff the Crime Dog.
The first 200 registered parties or meetings will receive a party packet, available at your nearest COPS substation.
Many neighborhoods will be hosting a variety of special events, including block parties, neighborhood parades, backyard cookouts, ice cream socials, community walks, and contests.
The COPS and Cars “Shine against Crime” car show will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 7 at Riverfront Park. The event is hosted by Cruizin’ Corvettes and sponsored by Spokane COPS.
The event is open to all classes of vehicles.
For information on these events call Pauline Posey at 835-4573 or Maurece Vulcano at 835-4572.

The sale will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 30 and 31 at 3119 S. Bernard St. Volunteers are needed to staff the sale.
