Monday’s games
Giants 8, Diamondbacks 4: Barry Bonds homered for the fourth time in six games as San Francisco won in Phoenix to notch its 10th straight win. Michael Tucker had four hits, including a home run, for the Giants, on their longest winning streak since 1998, when they won 11 straight. Four of the victories have come against Arizona.
Reds 9, Marlins 7: Ken Griffey Jr. passed Lou Gehrig on the career home run list with a go-ahead, three-run drive in the seventh inning that helped Cincinnati win in Florida. Griffey’s home run was his 13th this season and the 494th of his career, moving him into sole possession of 20th place. Sean Casey homered twice and raised his major league-leading average to .394. He scored four runs and had three RBIs for Cincinnati, which overcame a 5-0 deficit and stopped Florida’s five-game winning streak.
Mets 5, Phillies 3: Jason Phillips homered for the third time in two days, and New York ended a four-game losing streak with a victory in Philadelphia. Kaz Matsui had two hits and two runs scored and Mike Cameron added a two-run double for the Mets. Six New York pitchers combined to hold Philadelphia to five hits, including four singles. Orber Moreno (1-1) pitched two innings of relief to earn his first major league win. Braden Looper worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save in nine opportunities.
Cardinals 8, Pirates 3: Scott Rolen hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer and increased his major league-leading RBIs total to 53, leading St. Louis to a win in Pittsburgh. Jason Marquis (4-4) allowed three runs and 10 hits in seven-plus innings and also went 3-for-4 with a double to win for the third time in four starts.
Cubs 3, Astros 1: Greg Maddux earned his 293rd career victory and Moises Alou homered as Chicago upended visiting Houston. Maddux (4-4) allowed seven hits in 62/3 innings, including Lance Berkman’s ninth homer in 13 games, before leaving with a mild strain of a muscle in his right side.
Dodger 3, Brewers 2 (10): Cesar Izturis hit an RBI single in the 10th inning, capping Los Angeles’ come-from-behind victory over visiting Milwaukee. The win went to Cy Young closer Eric Gagne (2-0), who pitched one inning. Spot starter Matt Wise allowed three hits over five innings and scored Milwaukee’s first run on a sacrifice fly.
Braves 8, Expos 2: Rookie Nick Green’s first career home run highlighted a six-run seventh inning that led Atlanta to a win over visiting Montreal. Livan Hernandez (3-5) allowed a season-high five runs on six hits in 62/3 innings for the Expos.
Rockies 7, Padres 1: Jason Jennings held the Padres to four hits in eight innings as Colorado got a win in San Diego to snap a four-game losing streak. Jeromy Burnitz hit a go-ahead, two-run double with two outs in the fifth and Mark Sweeney, a former Padres player, went 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored. Jennings (4-5) beat Adam Eaton and the Padres for the second time in as many starts.
