Students honored for work against substance abuse
More than 300 students from eight local middle schools competed in the 14th annual Teens against Substance Abuse Campaign advertising and writing competition sponsored by the Spokane Advertising Federation.
The awards ceremony was held May 3 at Avista auditorium.
Students representing Cataldo Catholic School, Chase, Lakes (Coeur d’Alene), Northwood, Sacajawea, Salk, Spokane Christian Academy and St. Mary’s Catholic School submitted more than 400 entries.
Entries were submitted in six categories: print (newspaper or magazine ads), outdoor (billboards, bus boards, bench boards, yard signs), television, radio, overall campaign advertising (a combination of the above categories) and editorial writing.
Approximately $1,250 was given to individual students and student teams, in awards of $15 to $50 each.
Students from Salk Middle School were awarded an “Excellence” in the campaign category for their “We’re Watching You” advertisements promoting the 625-METH hotline. Salk’s TASC project and anonymous methamphetamine reporting hotline phone number were adopted by the city of Spokane last February.
TASC gives students the opportunity to learn about advertising, use their creativity and at the same time consider the consequences of smoking, alcohol, drugs and other forms of substance abuse.
Corporate sponsors for the competition and event were Avista Utilities, KREM-2 and WB-22. North by Northwest Productions donated time and expertise in making the awards presentation video.
