‘University district’ focus of workshops

The city of Spokane will hold the second of several university district community workshops from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 19 at Gonzaga University’s COG, 710 E. Desmet Ave., just east of Crosby Student Center.

Approximately 300 citizens attended the first meeting on March 31. That workshop identified a number of key elements that need to be addressed as plans progress for the university district area.

At the June 19 workshop, attendees will be able to view a variety of detailed maps that chart existing conditions in the area, which centers on the Riverpoint and Gonzaga campuses, from roads and pedestrian access to environmental conditions and possible historic structures.

Information will also be available on economic conditions such as business growth in the area and projected demand for new services, housing and other amenities.

Community members will be asked to take these conditions into consideration as they help identify sites where targeted development could anchor future growth and provide services needed by students, staff and faculty and people in the neighborhood.

Input from community members will be used as a basis for the next phase of concept development, to be presented at a future workshop.

Those attending are asked to park in the main Administration Building parking lot, accessible from Sharp and Addison.

Additional information on the university district concept is available at the city of Spokane Economic Development Office Web site, www.spokaneuniversitydistrict.info.

ChalkArtWalk Saturday

Because of bad weather May 22, Hillyard‘s annual ChalkArtWalk has been rescheduled for Saturday. Entrants will draw pictures on the sidewalks of Hillyard using chalk to depict this year’s theme, “Fun, Fun, Fun.”

Registration begins at 10 a.m. in the old US Bank parking lot at the corner of Queen and Market. The first 100 entries will receive a free T-shirt sporting last year’s winning art design.

This year’s judges are Bob Apple and Al French. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in five age groups and $100 for the Best in Show winner. That winner’s picture will be on next year’s T-shirt.

The Hillyard Festival Association will host a silent auction and other organizations will offer children’s activities.

Free curbside pickup

Free curbside pickup for the Pacific Park and Sundance neighborhoods will be Tuesday and for Woodridge on Wednesday. Trash must be out on the curb by 7 a.m. on the day of pickup.

You may put out cans, bags, bundles and boxes of household trash, small appliances (microwaves, toasters) small furniture (that one person can carry), and a limit of two tires.

No can, bag, bundle or box can exceed 85 pounds. No water heaters, cast-iron tubs, hazardous waste, large appliances, sod, tree stumps or concrete.

Tree branches can’t exceed 6 feet in length.

Free dump passes available

The Northwest Neighborhood Association will give residents of the association area 50 free dump passes valued at $25. The passes are good June 16-27.

Half of the passes will be distributed beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at the COPS Northwest substation, 2215 W. Wellesley Ave., Suite D, located next to the Laundromat at Shadle Center. The remainder will be issued at COPS Northwest at 9 a.m. Monday.

Passes will be issued, one to a person, on a first-come, first-served basis. A driver’s license or utility bill is required to verify area residence.

The Northwest Neighborhood Association covers the area west of Ash to the Spokane River, bounded by Francis on the north to Fairview-Belt-Indiana on the south, including Westgate and Northwest Terrace.
