Young artist profile

Young artist profile: Ryan Avery
Age: 30
Town: Spokane.
Education: Arizona Art Institute, associate degree in advertising design.
Day job: Cook at the Viking Tavern.
Kind of art: Performance painting.
What’s that: Using a quick painterly technique, Avery captures pulsing portraits of performing bands on large 4-by-6-foot canvases. In a style somewhere between the Fauves and cubists of the early 20th century, he captures impressions of his subjects and their music by using bold strokes and clashing colors of yellows, blues, greens, purples and reds.
Current show: Tonight Avery will be painting on stage at The Met during the 7 Senses 2004 performance beginning at 7 p.m. He plans to complete a 4-by-12-foot mural that will include all the musical acts.
Influences: Picasso and the French impressionists.
What’s ahead: Avery wants to progress in his technique, “produce more” and “grow old painting.”
Thoughts on painting: “I always feel as though each piece is never finished.”
Where to see more: Mootsy’s, 406 W. Sprague Ave.; and The B-Side, 230 W. Riverside Ave. or www.thebsideonline.com.
