Georgia opens with win

The Spokesman-Review

Bobby Felmy hit a three-run homer and reliever Johnny Dobbs escaped a bases-loaded jam to lead Georgia past Georgia Tech 7-5 in the first game of their best-of-three NCAA super regional series at Atlanta.

Marshall Szabo went 2 for 5 and had a two-run single to move the Bulldogs (42-21) within one win of a trip to the College World Series. Clint Sammons scored two runs and Will Startup pitched the final three innings for his ninth save.

Mike Nickeas had three hits — including a home run — and Eric Patterson also homered for the Yellow Jackets (44-20), who lost for only the third time in 26 games.

Dobbs (5-2) pitched 21/3 innings in relief of starter Michael Hyle and allowed only Nickeas’ solo shot in the sixth. He struck out one and walked one.

Georgia Tech’s Micah Owings lasted six innings and gave up seven runs on nine hits, both season highs.

Arkansas 7, Florida State 5: At Fayetteville, Ark., Scott Hode went 4 for 5 and Arkansas’ bullpen held Florida State to three hits in the final four innings.

Texas 15, Vanderbilt 3: At Austin, Texas, J.P. Howell struck out 13 in seven innings and Michael Hollimon homered and drove in three runs for Texas. Drew Stubbs and Taylor Teagarden also homered for the Longhorns, who had 16 hits.

Arizona 6, Long Beach State 5: At Long Beach, Calif., Brad Boyer tied the score with a two-run single in the ninth, stole second, and scored the game-winning run on Trevor Crowe’s triple to rally Arizona past Long Beach State.
