Indians make roster changes

The Spokesman-Review

The Northwest League baseball season has yet to begin and already the Spokane Indians roster has a different look.

The Texas Rangers, the Indians’ parent club, announced Sunday that eighth-round selection Mark Roberts will join the team on Wednesday. However, Spokane shortstop Casey Benjamin was promoted to the Clinton LumberKings of the low-A Midwest League. Benjamin will fill a roster spot in Clinton that was vacated when former Indians shortstop Ian Kinsler was promoted to Double-A Frisco of the Texas League. Kinsler was leading the MWL with a .402 average.

Roberts was the ace of the Oklahoma Sooners pitching staff this season. The right-hander is the highest drafted pitcher from the 2004 class to sign with the Rangers thus far. Roberts was an All-Big 12 Conference second-team selection after posting a 9-5 record with a 3.41 earned run average. Roberts leaves Oklahoma as the school’s all-time leader in strikeouts and innings pitched.

The Indians travel to Boise on Friday to open the season.

RiverHawks lose

Travis Kane held Spokane hitters at bay and the Wenatchee AppleSox (7-1, 4-1) rolled to a 13-1 victory over the visiting RiverHawks (2-4, 2-4) in Pacific International League play. .
