Building upgrades planned at schools

Even though the school year is over, there still will be plenty of activity at schools this summer. Several building improvements are scheduled to be completed before the start of the next school year.

Voter approval of the 2003 Spokane Public Schools bond is allowing a series of improvements to district schools while providing work for local contractors.

Sheridan, Willard and Arlington Elementary schools will be getting new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems designed to improve air quality, safety and health for students and staff. These schools will also be getting new roofs and, next summer, new flooring.

Bemiss, Grant and Regal elementary schools are scheduled for the same improvements, but their project schedule is reversed. This summer, their flooring will be installed, and next summer they will get new ventilation systems and new roofs.

Contracts have been awarded to Garco Construction of Spokane, with Bernardo-Willis Architects of Spokane performing the ventilation and roofing design work. The Beresford Co. will install the flooring.

At North Central High School, bond-funded work means new parking areas, more accessible athletic fields, a new girls softball field and improved stadium seating. Red Diamond Construction of Spokane was awarded a contract to make some of these improvements.

Bernardo-Willis Architects designed and is overseeing the project. The majority of this work is expected to be completed by fall.
