Snow eliminates NIC from conference tourney

Dristeena Veazie shook off a poor start and Snow College scored twice in the top of the seventh inning Friday to defeat North Idaho College 5-4, eliminating the Cardinals from the Scenic West Athletic Conference softball tournament at Cooper Diamonds in St. George, Utah.

NIC finished the season 29-30 after winning two of four games at the tourney. The Cardinals opened the day with a 5-2 win that eliminated CC Southern Nevada (16-32).

Veazie, who scattered nine hits, trailed 3-0 after the first inning and 4-3 after the sixth. NIC reliever Darci Byrne couldn’t hold the lead in the seventh.

NIC’s Erin Dubrock went 3 for 3 with one run batted in against the Badgers. Snow (23-31) will play Salt Lake CC (42-14) this morning for a shot at host Dixie State (49-4-2) in the championship round.

Jill Oglesbee and Shaena Pelan were both 1 for 3 with two RBIs in the win over CCSN. Nina Doane earned the win in relief, allowing two hits and no earned runs while striking out five in 3 2/3 innings.

• Hannah Shelley hit three homers on the day to power Community Colleges of Spokane to a 4-1, 6-0 sweep of host Blue Mountain CC at Pendleton, Ore.

The Sasquatch (25-11, 21-3) have already clinched the East Division championship in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges. BMCC (16-19, 11-13) began the day in a three-way tie for third place.

Baseball

Josh Hansen hit a two-out, three-run homer to right field in the ninth, giving San Diego (29-20, 15-10) a 3-0 win over visiting Gonzaga (20-24, 12-10) to open a three-game West Coast Conference series at Cunningham Stadium.

Hansen’s blast off Eric Dworkis (7-4) scored Joey Prast, who had a leadoff single, and Tom Caple, who was intentionally walked. Dworkis had allowed just three hits through eight innings.

Toreros starter Kyle Collins limited the Zags to three singles through eight innings. Nate Boman (2-1) earned the win with a 1-2-3 ninth.

USD closed within 2 1/2 games of first-place Loyola Marymount in the Coast Division. The Bulldogs are four games out of first place.

• Jose Rodriguez snapped a 1-all tie with a leadoff homer in the seventh, sparking Lewis-Clark State College (46-7) to a 7-1 non-conference win over Whitworth (13-24) at Harris Field in Lewiston.

Brandon Morris homered to open the Warriors’ four-run eighth. • Nick Batkoski’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Washington a 3-2 win over top-ranked Stanford in their Pac-10 game at Husky Ballpark in Seattle. The win moved the Huskies (27-14-1, 11-5) within a half-game of the first-place Cardinal (36-7, 10-3)

Track and field

Julie Pickler of Washington State scored 3,193 points and is in third in the heptathlon while Cougar David Turpin scored 3,583 points for seventh place in the decathlon after the first day of the Pacific-10 Combined Track & Field Events Championships being held at the University of Arizona in Tucson. ASU’s Jackie Johnson (3,421) leads the heptathlon and Sun Devils teammate Joshua Kinnaman is the decathlon leader.

• Idaho senior Heidi Lambley qualified for the NCAA regional meet in the women’s hammer by throwing a career-best 178 feet during the McDonald’s Outdoor Meet at Dan O’Brien Track and Field Complex on the Moscow campus.

Lambley finished second in the event to Andrea Thornton (199-5), who competed unattached. Idaho’s Jen Broncheau placed third with a career-high 167-10.

Women’s golf

Washington State stands in eighth place heading into the final round of the NCAA West Regional at the Stanford (Calif.) Golf Course.

The Cougars followed up Thursday’s opening-round 302 with a 304, placing them one shot ahead of Washington and two ahead of Oregon. The top eight teams will qualify for the national championships in Alabama.

WSU’s Kim Welch and Anastasia Kostina are tied for 12th place at 3-over-par 146. Teammate Stephanie Parsley moved up to a tie for 64th by carding a round of 76 that included 15 pars.

UCLA (575) leads the team race by four shots over California. Hannah Jun of UCLA held her lead, shooting a 1-under 71 to put her at 6-under 138, three shots ahead of Ohio State’s Allison Hanna.

Boxing

Shad Cramer, competing for the Spokane Eagles, lost a four-round bout by unanimous decision to Joe Greene of Queens, N.Y., at the National Golden Gloves tournament taking place in Kansas City, Mo.

The bout was a semifinal in the 165-pound division. Cramer, 18, won three bouts during the week at the tournament.
