The REALTOR® of the Year Award for 2004 was presented to Jim Dashiell, Tomlinson Black North, at the annual awards ceremony in recognition of outstanding service to the REALTOR® organization.

With 14 years of management and sales experience and a commitment to the REALTOR® profession, Dashiell served as the Spokane Association of REALTORS® president in 2003.

He has been involved in the Association almost from the beginning of his career starting in 1992. He served on the Governmental Affairs Committee for a number of years, chairing it twice. He is on the Board of Directors of both the Spokane Association of REALTORS® and the Washington Association of REALTORS®.

Dashiell was recently elected to Vice President Elect-Business Practices of the Washington Association of REALTORS®. He is also serving at the state level as a REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC) Trustee.

Among national designations he’s earned are the CRB (Certified Real Estate Broker Manager), GRI (Graduate, REALTOR® Institute), and ABR (Accredited Buyer Representative).

Shields Named Citizen of Year

Each year, the Spokane Association of REALTORS® recognizes a citizen in our community who has contributed in a special way to make Spokane a better community.

The 2004 Spokane Citizen of the Year is Walt Shields, the founder and administrator of the Mission Community Outreach Center, which has a special program that improves the lives of those less fortunate. Although the mission is not affiliated with any specific church, its purpose is to do good for others in the name of the Lord.

The center opened its doors on east Mission Avenue in 1996 and since then has provided services for thousands of people. The Mission Community Outreach Center serves Spokane County as an infant crisis bank providing families of domestic violence with clothing, household items and bedding, among other programs.

From August of 2002 through July 2003, the center served 13,884 low income individuals, including 8,030 children and 1,857 infants.

School supplies were given to 1,533 children and 1,127 elementary school children were supplied with back-to-school clothing and shoes.

Wilkening Honored for Service

The REALTOR® Community Service Award for 2004 has been awarded to Paul Wilkening, Coldwell Banker Northwest Group, at the annual Awards Luncheon.

The Community Service award is presented to a worthy recipient based on involvement in the community. Emphasis is placed on contribution to the community’s civic affairs, charitable organizations or other activity that demonstrates a commitment to Spokane.

Wilkening has tirelessly given to the community while representing the REALTOR® profession in an exemplary manner. His involvement includes volunteer work in many varied organizations for KSPS Public Television, Inland Empire Blues Music Society, Spokane Youth Sports and Six Bridges Arts Association.

He has served more than five years as either chair or co-chair of the site selection committee for Habitat for Humanity and is currently serving a second term on the Board of Directors of the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Inland Northwest.

When asked why he has been willing to give up so much time for worthy causes, his response was “whether you are born into financial affluence or abject poverty, there is not one of us on the planet who goes entirely throughout life without the need of a helping hand.”

Young Lands Achievement Honor

James Young, Tomlinson Black North, was honored with the 2004 REALTOR® Achievement award, presented each year to a member whose achievements and energy have contributed in an outstanding manner to the profession and the Spokane Association of REALTORS®.

Young has been in real estate for 10 years and currently serves as chair of the Association’s Grievance Committee and is a member of the board of directors. He is also active with the Washington Association of REALTORS®.

Young is a board member of the Morning Star Boys Ranch where he lived for seven years. He gives back to the Ranch whenever he can. His daughter calls him a great dad who sacrificed a lot for her. He was always there for her.

From a meager upbringing, he is the only one in his family with a college degree. A very giving and helpful individual, Young has demonstrated enthusiastic support for the Association of REALTORS® and his real estate career — the profession he always wanted.
