City library will use computerized phone system to deal with patrons

Attention, friends of the library.

Don’t hang up on the robotic-sounding voice on the telephone. It could be the Spokane Public Libraries using its new way of telling you that your book is in, or overdue.

The new feature — called telecirc — is a computerized voice system that calls customers and leaves a message on an answering machine. It also can talk to the customer.

Pat Partovi, library spokesperson, said because of confidentiality reasons, the name of the book will not be named in the message.

All customers who have a phone number on file and previously received mailed notices will receive phone notices. Those receiving notices by e-mail will continue to do so.

The system was implemented to get information to patrons sooner. It also is a money-saver for the library.

The system will make automated calls between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday through Saturday. Sunday calls will start at 2 p.m. No calls will be made after 9 p.m.

Customers also can call into the telecirc system regarding their library accounts. Call 444-5443 and enter your library card and PIN numbers.

Partovi said about 30 percent of cardholders are receiving their notices through e-mail, which has proven to be the most efficient way. Customers who would like to switch to e-mail notification can do so by asking a library staff person or by calling 444-5333.
