SCOPE volunteers plan fund-raisers Saturday

The Spokesman-Review

Community policing volunteers will hold a fund-raiser Saturday at a Spokane Valley restaurant.

University SCOPE, which stands for Sheriff’s Community Oriented Policing Effort, is coordinating the fund-raiser for two different causes. Money raised at Ron’s Drive-In, 12502 E. Sprague Ave., will go to the Spokane County Sheriff’s K-9 unit as well as to a deputy’s family whose son is undergoing expensive treatment for cerebral palsy.

Ron’s Drive-In will donate 25 percent of its gross sales Saturday to University SCOPE. The community policing organization will in turn donate to the Sheriff’s K-9 unit and the Stipe family, said University SCOPE member John Baldwin, who is helping organize the event.

University SCOPE volunteers will also be at Ron’s running a car wash and SCOPE volunteers will do fingerprinting of children as part of Operation Family ID on Saturday, Baldwin said.

There will also be classic cars on display and McGruff the Crime Dog is expected to make an appearance.

The event will last from 10:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., Baldwin said.

University SCOPE members decided they wanted to give money to the K-9 unit after Jake, one of the narcotics dogs, had to retire early due to an injury.

University SCOPE members were also interested in donating money to the family of Hayden Stipe. The child has cerebral palsy. His parents, Steve and Becky Stipe, want to take Hayden for treatment at a facility called Euromed in Mielno, Poland. The hope is that the treatment will help Hayden learn to walk. Steve Stipe is a member of the Sheriff’s K-9 unit.
