Read interested in Griz A.D. job
MISSOULA – Montana’s all-time winningest football coach plans to visit Missoula soon with a possible interest in becoming the school’s athletic director.
“I am going to come and talk with the people there,” said former Grizzlies football coach Don Read. “But it’s really premature to say anything else.”
But, Read noted, “To say I wasn’t interested wouldn’t be right either.”
Read coached from 1986-95, retiring after the Griz’ first Division I-AA national title in 1995. He compiled an 85-36 record in his tenure.
Montana’s former athletic director Wayne Hogan resigned on March 3 in the wake of revelations that the athletic department was facing a nearly $1 million deficit. Marie Porter has been the interim athletic director.
“I’ve heard the rumor (about Read),” Porter said Thursday. “I’ve heard a lot of rumors about various plans for the leadership of the program, but I haven’t heard anything specific.”
