Florida State eliminates Huskies from WCWS
Jessica van der Linden allowed four hits and scored a run, leading Florida State to a 2-0 victory over Washington and eliminating the Huskies from the NCAA Women’s College World Series on Saturday at Oklahoma City.
Van der Linden (29-8) fanned 10 batters and walked two in hurling her 20th shutout of the season.
She singled with one out in the fourth inning and eventually scored when Tatian George hit a two-run homer off Ashley Boek (29-13).
It was George’s sixth homer of the season.
Washington (40-19) left nine base runners against van der Linden.
Boek pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out two.
Stanford 5, Michigan 4: In the first game, Meghan Sickler’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh provided the go-ahead run for the Cardinal in a victory over the Wolverines.
Michigan (54-13) was eliminated from the eight-team, double elimination tournament.
Reliever Nicole Motycka (22-5) took the loss, allowing eight hits and three runs in five innings.
Dana Sorensen (33-10) went the distance for Stanford, allowing four hits and four runs.
Late games postponed
Oklahoma led Stanford 2-1 after five innings when play was stopped for the night because of thunderstorms and tornadoes in the Oklahoma City area. The late game between Florida State (62-11) and LSU (55-11) was also postponed until today.
Oklahoma (45-21-1) and Stanford (49-18) will resume their game this morning, with the Seminoles and Tigers to play 30 minutes after the first game ends.
The winner of the Oklahoma-Stanford game will play defending champion UCLA (45-9) in the semifinals later today, and the winner of the Florida State-LSU game will play California (52-11).
