The ability of a computer to do one quadrillion floating point operations per second (FLOPS) — alternately, 1,000 teraflops. Today’s fastest parallel computing operations are capable of teraflop speeds; scientists predict we’ll see a petaflop computer by 2010, although supercomputer-research companies say it could be as early as 2006.
