Aromatherapy steam baths offered at Scents Abilities

People looking for a place to relax or be energized can find both at the new Scents Abilities. The business specializes in mixing therapeutic oils to provide therapy and offer pleasant scents to people in a private steam bath.

The business is owned and operated by Elizabeth Kennett in a room rented in the Capri Salon, 15605 E. Sprague Ave. She mixes her own oils into blends called Morning Revival, Oriental Bliss, The Secret Garden and The Abominable Snowman.

Aromatherapy affects the mind, body and spirit, Kennett said. “I have blends that can help with depression, sinusitis,” she said. “Stress is a big one.”

While the oils do work, Kennett said she can’t offer any guarantees, “just like a doctor can’t.”

Kennett said she earned certification in aromatherapy from the Australasian College of Health Sciences in Portland even though Washington state does not require aromatherapists to be licensed. “I’ve gone to school and studied 40 oils intensely, down to the chemical structure,” she said.

Part of the reason she received extra training is because she wanted to learn about the safety of the oils she uses. “There are definitely therapeutic thresholds that you don’t want to cross.”

Each client receives a consultation followed by a 20-minute session in the private steam room. “So far everybody loves it who has gone through. I’m trying to get the word out and let people know I’m here. I feel like this is something new to the area.”

Kinnett charges $25 per session. Call 953-0475 for an appointment.

Jaremko building again

Jaremko Nissan Saab general manager John Wood will be happy when construction of the dealership’s new Nissan showroom is complete. “We have a modular home we’ve put on our lot to house some of our staff,” he said. “We also crammed some people in our Saab showroom. It’ll be very nice when it’s completed. Everybody is looking forward to it.”

The new showroom at 6901 E. Sprague Ave. will occupy 8,500-square feet and is expected to be complete by the end of the year. Construction started in August. “Nissan is trying to gain identity, and they are requiring most dealers nationally to build new showrooms according to their plan,” Wood said.

The manufacturer will assist with the expected $1.2 million price for the project, he said. Just last year the dealership built a new showroom for their Saabs. “It’s not near the size of the Nissan showroom,” he said. “Saab is not a high volume franchise.”

While the dealership staff has been homeless since the old showroom was torn down, the Nissans for sale have also been displaced. “We really have them scattered around,” he said. “They’re in the lot, across the street.”

Wood said that business has suffered since construction began, with some customers not sure how to enter the business.

“We will be up and running before too long,” he promised.
