Role of food in religion topic of panel at SCC

From staff reports

As part of Spokane Community College’s culinary culture symposium, people from various faith traditions will present “Sacred and Profane: Food and Religion” on Monday at SCC’s Center for the Humanities.

Religious leaders and others from the community will share insights about the role of food in religion. Organizers say the event is an opportunity to learn more about Spokane’s diverse community, as well as better understand cultural and religious value systems through the discussion of food.

Panelists will discuss the connection between physical consumption and spiritual growth; the use of food in religious ceremonies; the role of “taboo” foods in faith systems and the rationale for not eating certain kinds of food.

Panel members include representatives from these faith traditions: Seventh-day Adventist; Eckankar Satang; Greek Orthodox; Hindu; Islam; Judaism; Latter-day Saints; Lutheran; and Roman Catholic.

The event starts at 12:30 p.m. and is open to the public. SCC’s Center for the Humanities is located on the second floor of the Learning Resources Center, which is Building 16.
