Water line bursts on Riverside
City crews were working to fix a busted water pipe in downtown Spokane on Saturday night.
Workers shut off the water to businesses on Riverside Avenue between Howard and Stevens streets at about 6:30 p.m. Another team was coming to the scene to get under the pavement to fix the leak so the water could be turned on.
When crews first arrived at about 6 p.m., water was sprouting through cracks in the street, creating a 3-foot-long water fountain about 4 inches high.
WSP focusing on drunken drivers
The Washington State Patrol has increased its emphasis on stopping drunken drivers for the holiday season.
Troopers in the Spokane area have made 114 arrests for driving under the influence in the past two weeks, WSP spokesman Trooper Jim Hays said in a press release.
The WSP made more than 50 percent of all drunken driving arrests in the state last year even though its troopers represent only 7 percent of all police officers in Washington, Hays said. The extra emphasis on DUI as well as speeding and other infractions will continue through Jan. 2, Hays said.
