Brophy extends her record for victories at Notre Dame

Katie Brophy, the first women’s golfer in Notre Dame history to win two invitational tournaments in her career, is now the first to three.

The junior from Gonzaga Prep added to her school record last weekend with a two-stroke victory in the Jeannine McHaney Invitational/Central Regional Preview in Lubbock, Texas.

Brophy, a two-time All-Big East selection, shot 69-72 for a 3-under-par 141 to lead the Irish to a four-stroke victory over Oklahoma in the 18-team field in a tournament shortened to 36 holes after the scheduled second round was rained out. Top-seeded Missouri tied for third.

College scene

Senior Jessica Hensen of University and freshman Kara Hamby of Mead, who share time at the same position on the No. 2-ranked Seattle Pacific women’s soccer team, each had an assist Wednesday as the Falcons defeated Central Washington 4-0.

Karinda Cruse of Hayden, Idaho, continues to have an outstanding freshman volleyball season at George Fox.

The Coeur d’Alene High graduate had 33 kills, 16 digs, two aces and two blocks as the Bruins went 1-1 last week. It earned Cruse honorable mention as Northwest Conference player of the week. Her efforts came despite a shoulder injury that restricted her court time.

Cruse would lead the NWC in kills with a 4.17 average, but is five games short of qualifying to be among the conference statistical leaders because she missed the Colorado College Invitational.

Football

Friday, prior to its game with Gonzaga Prep, Central Valley will conduct Charlie Dean Night, and his former players are invited to gather for a reunion with their coach and attend a pre-game ceremony, said current coach Rick Giampietri.

Oklahoma native Dean, 79, who coached in high school and college in Texas, came to CV in 1964 and coached through 1974, compiling an 84-11-2 record with seven unbeaten seasons. He was inducted into the Inland Northwest Hall of Fame in 1987.

The Arena will be the site Oct. 22 for a sports career seminar and job fair put on by Brett Sports and Entertainment.

Keynote speaker at the luncheon will be Rob Cornilles, founder and president of Game Face Inc., a leading international sports sales training and career placement organization.

Check-in and registration begin at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $70 before Oct. 13, $85 after that. The fee includes participation in the job fair and seminar, lunch and a ticket to a Spokane Chiefs vs. Portland hockey game that night in the Arena.
