Injured Roddick no match for Federer
Top-ranked Roger Federer routed an injured Andy Roddick 6-4, 6-0 Sunday to capture the Thailand Open in Bangkok, joining John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg as the only players to win 12 straight ATP Tour finals in the last 25 years.
“It would be nice to break their record, but I’ll take one tournament at a time,” said Federer, who has won 10 titles this year. “I hope to play well until the end of the season.”
Federer needed just 58 minutes to defeat the second-seeded Roddick, whose elbow was sore from his semifinal victory over Marat Safin.
Federer started the streak in Vienna, Austria, last October.
Korea Open
Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova overwhelmed first-time finalist Marta Domachowska of Poland 6-1, 6-1 to win the inaugural Korea Open in Seoul, South Korea.
Sharapova needed 56 minutes to capture the fifth singles title of her career and third this year. The top-seeded Russian lost just 15 games during the tournament.
Shanghai Open
Argentina’s Guillermo Canas won his third title of the year with a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Germany’s Lars Burgsmuller at the Shanghai Open.
The victory was another step in a comeback by Canas, who missed most of the 2003 season because of wrist surgery and ended the year ranked 133rd. He also won this year in Stuttgart, Germany, and Umag, Croatia.
Gaz de France Stars
Top-seeded Elena Dementieva won the last five games to beat Elena Bovina 0-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the WTA Tour’s latest all-Russian final to win the Gaz de France Stars tournament in Hasselt, Belgium.
It’s the first title of 2004 for Dementieva.
Guangzhou Open
Li Na became the first Chinese to win a WTA singles title, downing Slovakia’s Martina Sucha 6-3, 6-4 in the Guangzhou Open final in Beijing.
Campionati Internazionali di Sicilia
Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic won his first ATP title, needing just one hour to defeat Filippo Volandri of Italy 6-3, 6-3 at the Campionati Internazionali di Sicilia in Palermo, Italy.
