Tim Hattenburg
Democrat
Age: 51
Personal: married, with three grown children.
Education: Graduated from Central Valley High School, Spokane Falls Community College and earned a bachelor of arts in education at Washington State University. He has completed post-graduate work at Eastern Washington and Gonzaga universities and Whitworth College.
Professional: Hattenburg taught history and social studies at North Pines Middle School for 18 years. He also was athletic director and department chairman, and he coached several sports. Nominated for Washington state Teacher of the Year in 1990.
Political: This is Hattenburg’s first run for office. He’s been active in the local Democratic Party since he retired from teaching.
Key issues: Job growth. Keeping down the cost of health care and prescription drugs. Restricting outsourcing.
Bob McCaslin
Republican
Age: 78
Personal: widowed and divorced twice, with two grown children.
Education: Graduated from high school in Warren, Ohio. He has a bachelor’s degree in sociology and economics from Washington State University. He completed some postgraduate work in those subjects, also at WSU.
Professional: Retired. Worked at Kaiser Aluminum for 18 years and was a real estate agent for 18 years.
Political: McCaslin has been District 4’s state senator since 1981. He’s chairman of the Senate judiciary committee and serves on the government operations and elections committee, and the technology and communications committee. He is past chairman of the government operations committee.
Key issues: Exceptional sentencing – he disagrees with a recent Supreme Court ruling limiting judges’ ability to increase sentences above the standard range. Wants Washington to become more business-friendly.
