Boise State facility to study aging
BOISE – A new center at Boise State University will support research on aging and related issues, school officials announced Monday.
The Center for the Study of Aging will investigate local and national policy on aging-related issues and research topics such as elder abuse and fraud, estate planning, pain management and health policies. Students taking classes at the center can earn a graduate certificate in gerontological studies.
The fastest growing segment of Idaho’s population is people over the age of 85, and 16 percent of residents are 60 or older, school officials said. By 2020, about 25 percent of residents are expected to be over age 60.
“In seven short years, the beginning of the tsunami of the baby boomer cohort reaches retirement age,” said James Girvan, dean of Boise State’s College of Health Sciences.
