LC’s Peter Adams wins arts honor
Lewis and Clark High School senior Peter Adams’ design has been chosen for Washington state’s 2004 state flag celebrating the arts.
Adams’ design will be manufactured into a large flag that will be flown in Washington, D.C., for the month of March, which is National Youth Art month.
His design was chosen from among 300 entries statewide. The design had to include all of the arts, represent Washington state, and be original and colorful.
Adams’ design features an electric guitar, musical notes, drama masks, a red dancing figure, and an evergreen tree, all on a black background.
Adams said he gets his inspiration from his love of music and his parents, Michael and Jeanne Adams, who are both in art-related careers.
“I get my inspiration from classic rock – the way it feels and from album covers,” said Adams. He’s in an Advance Placement Art class and has taken art since his sophomore year.
Adams hopes to pursue an art-related career and is currently working on a portfolio to obtain an art scholarship. He’s thinking about attending the University of San Diego or University of Southern California.
The theme for his portfolio is music and lifestyles reflected in art. He’s currently working on a painting of people dancing in an Irish pub.
Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education and to encourage support for school art programs.
The flag will hang in the Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction the remainder of the year, and the agency will feature the design on all promotional materials for art education.
