Stanback gets shot at leading

Associated Press

SEATTLE — Injuries have made Isaiah Stanback the third starting quarterback this season for the University of Washington, the first time the Huskies will have had so many in 32 years.

Stanback, 20, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound sophomore, will play the whole game Saturday at No. 1 Southern California unless circumstances dictate otherwise, coach Keith Gilbertson said Wednesday.

Gilbertson said he had been “99 percent sure” Stanback would be the starter but wanted to see all three of his quarterbacks in at least one full-pads practice before making his decision.

Stanback, a graduate of Garfield High in Seattle, would be the first black quarterback to start for Washington since Warren Moon completed his college career in the 1978 Rose Bowl.

The Huskies (1-5) began the season with Casey Paus as the starting quarterback, Stanback and redshirt freshman Carl Bonnell as backups.

Stanback entered last Saturday’s game against Oregon State in the second quarter and completed 11 of 29 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 51 yards in a 29-14 loss.
