Moon to go into eclipse tonight just after sunset
The full moon rising in the east tonight will have an unusual look to it.
The moon will be partly covered by the earth’s shadow as it clears the horizon just after sunset. The moon will move into a total eclipse from 7:23 p.m. until 8:44 p.m., with another partial eclipse phase lasting until 9:54 p.m.
During total eclipse, the moon normally takes on the color of dusk as light from the earth’s atmosphere is reflected off the moon’s surface.
Members of the Spokane Astronomical Society will be holding two public gatherings at the South Side Sports Complex at 47th and Regal and at the lawn in front of the Shadle Library, both beginning at dark. The members will set up telescopes for the public and explain the astronomical forces at work. The society’s public viewings have proven popular and are big draws for families with school-age children.
Weather forecasters said skies in the Spokane region should be clearing as evening arrives. “It’s looking like it’s going to be good,” said Mary Singer of the astronomical society.
