NC, EV to meet in 3A soccer regional
Ashlee Michelson’s hat trick lifted North Central to a 4-0 shutout win over Prosser in a 3A regional loser-out soccer contest at North Central.
Michelson scored her first goal 9 minutes in, then headed in a pair of goals off corner kicks against the Mustangs (9-8), the No. 4 seed from the Mid-Valley League.
Erika Horobiowski scored with 4 minutes left in the match to generate the final margin.
North Central (9-8) plays at East Valley (9-7) in a loser-out game Saturday at 1 p.m.
In other games: East Valley (9-7) held first-half leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but couldn’t stop Hanford (15-2), dropping a 4-3 decision in a first-round match. Naomi Varney scored twice in the first 18 minutes for the Knights, the first time on a one-on-one play with the Falcons’ goalkeeper, Lacey Golden, who made 11 saves in the match. East Valley had the ball deep inside Hanford territory in the final minutes of the match, getting a goal from Kaylyn Plumb at the 76:00 mark, but could not push the tying goal across. … Cheney (7-10) was blanked by undefeated host West Valley-Yakima (16-0-1) 5-0, giving up all five goals in the second half. Cheney hosts Selah (11-5), a 5-0 winner of Sunnyside (5-11) Saturday.
In the Great Northern League, Riverside completed an undefeated regular season when the Rams scored the game’s only goal on a free kick with 10 minutes left in their game with visiting Pullman. The Greyhounds were called for a hand ball, giving Riverside (12-0) the free kick from 30 yards out, and senior Britney Paul converted, driving the ball toward the far post, where it dribbled under the sliding goaltender. Pullman (10-2) finished second and earned a first-round playoff bye along with the Rams. … Sara Massey scored her second hat trick of the week and fourth of the season to lift Medical Lake (7-5) to a 3-1 win over visiting Colville (2-10). The midfielder scored the game-winner after taking a through ball from Alex Landry and beating the Colville keeper one-on-one. The Cardinals, the No. 3 seed, will host a playoff game Tuesday.
Volleyball
Colville (10-1) clinched no less worse than a tie for the Great Northern League championship, sweeping winless Deer Park (0-12) at home, 25-18, 25-11, 25-14. Nikki Bardwell knocked down a dozen kills and Jordan Emmil dished off 24 assists. Colville hosts second-place Pullman in the regular season finale Saturday. … The Greyhounds (9-2) kept their hopes of a share of the league championship by sweeping the Cardinals (2-9) at Medical Lake. Amy Small had 23 assists, Katie Hinrichs had 21 digs and Grethe Vogel had 11 kills and three aces to lead Pullman. … Riverside (5-7) held home court after dropping the first two games, knocking off visiting Chewelah (6-5) in five games, 12-25, 22-25, 25-17, 29-27, 15-13. Angela Hartill had 24 kills, eight blocks and 11 digs to lead the Rams.
Cross country
Lakeside earned swept the team championships in the District 7 2A championships. The Eagles won the boys title, edging previously undefeated Colville by three points. Pullman’s Pawel Szafruga won the individual title, finishing in 17:01.5 on the Deer Park course. The undefeated Lakeside girls finished 22 points ahead of Medical Lake. Colville’s Brittney Williams won individual honors by finishing in 19:59.6. The top three teams and top 15 individuals in both races advance to state.
