Suspect arrested after chase
Police arrested a man Monday after chasing a driver traveling without headlights.
The incident began Monday about 11:40 p.m. when a Spokane County sheriff’s deputy saw a car traveling without headlights along Sprague Avenue near Fancher Way, said Cpl. Dave Reagan, spokesman for the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Ken Richey attempted to stop the driver of the 1993 Saturn. Instead of slowing down, the driver allegedly sped up, at one point going more than 80 mph along Appleway Avenue, Reagan said.
Richey briefly lost track of the car but found it, abandoned, on Harrington Avenue near Vista Road. Other officers responded and eventually found the suspected driver, identified as Shane C. Ellingsworth, 32, of Spokane, in a nearby house, Reagan said.
The Saturn had been reported stolen the previous week from Central Valley High School, Reagan said.
Ellingsworth was arrested on charges of suspicion of possessing stolen property and for trying to elude police. He was booked into the Spokane County Jail.
