Mead superintendent recovering from surgery
Mead Superintendent Steve Enoch underwent emergency intestinal surgery recently in California and will likely miss the beginning of the school year, school officials said.
“He’s in satisfactory condition,” assistant superintendent Al Swanson said last week.
Enoch joined the Mead district in July 2002. He had been the superintendent of the San Juan School District from 1995 until he took the Mead superintendent job two years ago.
Enoch had also served as superintendent of schools for Bonsall School District in California. He’s also a former elementary school principal for districts in Fountain Valley and Beverly Hills, Calif. He received a master’s degree from California State University at Fullerton.
Historical Clayton School getting facelift
Work has begun on refurbishing the 1914 two-story Clayton School building. The 7,200-square-foot schoolhouse, on five acres at Swenson and Park Street in Clayton, Wash., will be the new home of Deer Park School District’s Home Link program.
According to Wayne Leonard, school district business manager, the school board approved a bid from Burton Construction for the $1.45 million project.
Work is expected to be completed in time for the second semester in early February.
Home Link is a contract-based education program for former home-schooled students. The program, currently housed in the Deer Park School District’s administration building, continues to add new students.
Last summer, the Governors Advisory Council on Historic Preservation voted to add the Clayton schoolhouse to the Washington Heritage Registry. The schoolhouse is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
School supplies help needy kids
A new school year may present a heavy financial burden for families who cannot afford all the required school supplies. To ease this burden, the Salvation Army has placed barrels at Fred Meyer stories throughout the city.
The program runs through Monday.
Donate backpacks, binders, calculators, computer discs, markers, pencils, pens, or other school supplies at the Fred Meyer stores: 525 E. Francis, 400 S. Thor St., 12120 N. Division St., 15609 E. Sprague Ave. or at the Salvation Army office, 222 E. Indiana Ave.
The Salvation Army can assist families through Sally’s House, a 24-hour emergency foster care facility for children ages 2 to 12. Sally’s House equips 8 to 12 foster children per month throughout the year with school supplies.
Assistance is also provided to SAFE Center, a facility that currently provides food, shelter and basic necessities to 15 homeless families and Family Services. Last year Family Services helped 60 to 70 families with back to school needs until they ran out of supplies.
