Quinn Gray threw three touchdown passes in the final eight minutes and the Jacksonville Jaguars ended the New England Patriots’ poor exhibition season with a 31-0 win Thursday night at Foxboro, Mass.

If there was any consolation for the Super Bowl champs, they played without most of their first-stringers, including quarterback Tom Brady, although they were healthy.

Still, the Jaguars, who ended their exhibition season at 3-1, got much better performances from their backups after starting quarterback Byron Leftwich played just three series, going 4 for 8 for 24 yards.

The Patriots lost their third straight game, the others 31-3 at Cincinnati and 20-17 at Carolina. They will open their season at home Thursday against Indianapolis with a 15-game winning streak covering the last regular season and playoffs.

Panthers 16, Steelers 13

One drive was enough for Carolina’s Jake Delhomme to get ready for the season. Turns out one quarter wasn’t enough for Pittsburgh’s Tommy Maddox.

Rod Rutherford’s 57-yard completion to Eugene Baker in the fourth quarter set up John Kasay’s third field goal, and Carolina beat the Steelers at Pittsburgh to finish their second consecutive unbeaten preseason.

Ravens 27, Giants 17

With the exception of a knee injury to seven-time Pro Bowl tackle Jonathan Ogden, everything went right for Baltimore in Thursday night’s preseason finale against New York.

Kyle Boller threw a touchdown pass, Chris McAlister scored on an interception return and former Giants coach Jim Fassel got to enjoy it all on the Ravens’ sideline at East Rutherford, N.J.

The game was Fassel’s first here since being fired by the Giants after a 4-12 campaign last season.

Lions 20, Bills 17

Detroit lost three defensive backs to injury but held on to beat Buffalo at Detroit.

Drew Bledsoe led Buffalo’s first-string offense to its only touchdown of the preseason.

The Lions went ahead for good late in the third quarter when Rick Mirer lobbed a 26-yard TD to David Kircus, giving them a 20-17 lead.

Cowboys 24, Chiefs 20

As much as Bill Parcells liked what his backups did, his starters left plenty to be desired in the Dallas’ preseason finale.

Vinny Testaverde could’ve had as many interceptions as completions and Eddie George had more carries than yards. Then Tony Romo led the Cowboys on three straight scoring drives and the defense made it hold up in the fourth quarter in a victory over Kansas City at Irving, Texas.

Buccaneers 17, Texans 9

Michael Pittman, who got extensive playing time because the Bucs rested starter Charlie Garner, ran for 71 yards on 12 carries and Tampa Bay held Houston to three field goals at Houston.

Cardinals 33, Broncos 21

Neil Rackers kicked four field goals and Josh McCown and Sean King combined to go 14 for 19 passing, leading the Arizona to a victory at Denver.

Raiders 28, Rams 24

Rich Gannon threw his first touchdown pass of the preseason – a 5-yard pass to Justin Fargas – in Oakland’s final exhibition game, a win over St. Louis at Oakland.

Chargers 31, 49ers 15

Philip Rivers looked like an overmatched rookie in the first half. But once he got the chance to play against San Francisco’s backup defenders, he showed signs of why the San Diego Chargers believe he’s their quarterback of the future.

Rivers completed his first 13 passes of the second half and the Chargers finished the preseason with a victory over the 49ers at San Francisco.

Former EWU running back Jesse Chatman ran for 65 yards for the Chargers.
