Thursday’s N.L games
Marlins 9, Mets 6: Carl Pavano moved into a tie for the league lead with his 16th win, helping Florida gain ground in the wild-card chase with a win at New York. Damion Easley and Juan Encarnacion each drove in three runs for the Marlins, who swept the four-game series and have won seven consecutive games. Florida will have to wait at least a few days to get back on the field, because tonight’s series opener against the wild-card leading Chicago Cubs was postponed because of Hurricane Frances.
Cardinals 7, Padres 2: Albert Pujols and Jim Edmonds homered in the first and Jeff Suppan won his fifth consecutive start, leading St. Louis to a three-game sweep of visiting San Diego. Pujols and Edmonds each homered three times in the series. The Cardinals have won six in a row and 11 of 13 and have the majors’ best record at 89-44.
Brewers 7, Pirates 1: Ben Sheets threw a four-hitter for his first win since the All-Star break, Bill Hall had four RBIs and Milwaukee defeated visiting Pittsburgh to salvage a split of their four-game series. Hall and Keith Ginter homered for the Brewers, who had lost eight consecutive series and 12 of 13.
Dodgers 8, Diamondbacks 4: Adrian Beltre hit his 43rd homer and Milton Bradley doubled twice as visiting Los Angeles toppled Arizona at Phoenix. Bradley, who’ll leave the team briefly today following the death of his grandfather, doubled in the go-ahead run off Shane Nance (1-1) in the eighth, bringing Cesar Izturis home from first. Beltre hit a 418-foot shot to right-center leading off the second. Beltre moved into a tie for second with Duke Snyder and Gary Sheffield on the Dodgers’ list for most homers in a season.
Rockies 6, Giants 5: Vinny Castilla hit a two-run homer, Matt Holliday drove in two runs and visiting Colorado edged Jason Schmidt (15-6) and San Francisco. Joe Kennedy (7-6) pitched effectively into the eighth as the Rockies won their second consecutive game following a season-high, eight-game losing streak. They had lost nine consecutive road games. Shawn Chacon pitched the ninth for his 32nd save in 40 opportunities.
