Brimmerton wins All American Derby in second-fastest time

Brimmerton got a clean bill of health earlier this year. Sunday, he won the $553,593 All American Derby, posting the second-fastest time in the history of the race in Ruidoso Downs, N.M.

Running into a stiff headwind, Brimmerton won the 440-yard race in 21.102 seconds. Snow Big Deal set the track record last year in 20. 946.

The 3-year-old colt outran nine other quarter horses with a late rush. He broke fifth, but quickly reeled in the front-runners to hit the wire a neck in front of Cash for Kas. Hadtobenuts was another neck back in third.

Brimmerton paid $5.80, $3.80 and $3.40. Cash for Kas returned $8and $6 and Hadtobenuts paid $6 to show.

“Humaita won the first division of the $110,400 Glens Falls Handicap, and Arvada prevailed in the second division of the Grade 3 feature at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Spinks holds off Gonzalez

Cory Spinks easily retained his undisputed welterweight championship Saturday night, unanimously outpointing Miguel Angel Gonzalez at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Spinks (34-2) won 10 of the 12 rounds on all three judges’ cards in a dominant performance. Gonzalez (49-4-1) was never able to land consecutive punches.

“I’m very satisfied. I dominated the fight,” said Spinks, the son of the former heavyweight champion Leon Spinks. “What more could I ask for?”

Miscellany

White, two others arrested

Free-agent forward Rodney White and two other men face weapons charges after a uniformed Secret Service officer reported seeing them randomly shooting into the air in Washington.

Authorities identified the men as White, 24, of Denver; Anthony O. Butler Jr., 21, of Detroit; and Kyle A. Doman, 25, of Bowie, Md.

Each was charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm – a felony.

“Olympic champion Ales Valenta of the Czech Republic set a world record in Mount Buller, Australia, during the second round of World Cup freestyle aerial skiing.

Valenta had 262.76 points for two jumps, bettering the mark of 260.98 set by American Eric Bergoust at Mount Buller in 2001.

Lydia Ierodiaconou of Australia took first place for the second straight day among the women on the Australian leg of the World Cup, the opening weekend of the 13-event series.

“Olympic gold medalist Olga Kuzenkova of Russia captured the women’s hammer throw at the World Athletics Final in Budapest, Hungary, and Olli-Pekka Karjalainen of Finland won the men’s event.
