Pregnant woman seriously hurt in fall from window during fire

A pregnant woman was seriously injured when she fell from a second-floor windowsill while trying to escape an early morning fire that may have been intentionally set.

Andrea Daymude reportedly stepped out a window and onto a narrow brick sill to escape a blaze that was sweeping through the hallway of the Reilly Apartments, 1526 W. Broadway, the building’s owner and Spokane Fire Department officials said.

She slipped and fell onto a concrete sidewalk.

Daymude was taken to Deaconess Medical Center where she was initially in critical condition.

Her condition was upgraded to serious by late afternoon. A hospital official declined to comment further.

Fire officials confirmed that arson is the suspected cause of Saturday’s fire, which apparently started in the stairwell.

Tests are being conducted to determine if an accelerant was used.

The Spokane Fire Department received a call reporting the fire around 6:19 a.m.

The stairwell was completely charred. Stanley E. Nunn, owner of the Reilly Apartments, said he was told the fire spread through the hallway but didn’t enter the building’s eight apartments, which were smoke-damaged.

The fire displaced five adult residents, who were unable to return to their apartments.

The Reilly has had other problems over the years.

Last year, a drug user was found dead in the stairwell. Six years ago, two bodies were found in a room, dead from a suspected murder-suicide.
