Bird’s trip back home spoiled
The Connecticut Sun spoiled Sue Bird’s return and pulled into first place in the process.
Bird had nine points, seven assists and five rebounds in front of her former hometown fans Sunday, but the slumping Seattle Storm couldn’t slow down the Sun, who won their third straight with a 71-64 victory in Uncasville, Conn., and pulled into a first-place tie with the Charlotte Sting in the Eastern Conference.
The Sun and Sting meet Wednesday in Charlotte in what could be a showdown for the conference title.
Lauren Jackson led Seattle (18-13) with a game-high 24 points, scoring 16 in the first half.
Liberty 64, Silver Stars 62: Crystal Robinson scored 16 points and Becky Hammon had 15 to rally New York past last-place San Antonio in New York. Robinson scored 14 second-half points — including four 3-pointers — and Hammon made a pair of driving layups in the final 27 seconds to snap the Liberty’s three-game losing streak.
Mystics 75, Comets 63: Alana Beard scored 21 points to help Washington keep its playoff hopes alive with a victory over visiting Houston.
Sparks 65, Monarchs 52: Lisa Leslie scored 23 points, and Los Angeles clinched first place in the West with a win over visiting Sacramento.
