Bulldogs rally, trip up Bengals

The Spokesman-Review

The Gonzaga Bulldogs scored a pair of second-half goals to post a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Idaho State Bengals in non-conference women’s soccer play on Sunday at Martin Field.

Annie Hawkins found the net at the 61:49 mark to knot the score at a goal apiece and Heather Horn nailed the game-winner at 82:39 for the Bulldogs (6-2).

•The Eastern Washington Eagles jumped out to a quick lead but couldn’t make it stand up and settled for a 1-1 tie with the visiting Colorado College Tigers.

Freshman Cyeeta Mott staked the Eagles (3-5-1) to a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.

The Tigers (4-3-1) pulled even on Laura Wilcox’s penalty-kick goal in the 82nd minute.

•Ashley Fisk scored on a penalty kick 10:54 into the second half and the Whitworth Pirates held on for a 2-1 victory over the Pacific Boxers in Northwest Conference play at Whitworth Soccer Field.

Whitworth (4-2, 3-0) took a 1-0 lead at the half on a goal by Jael Hagerott.

Hagerott also had a hand in Fisk’s game-winner. The reigning NWC player of the year beat two defenders in the Pacific box and was fouled from behind drawing the penalty kick.

The Boxers (2-3, 1-2) had evened the score just 30 seconds earlier on a goal by Laura Hill.

•Lightning forced the cancellation of the Idaho Vandals’ non-conference match against the 12th-ranked Pepperdine Waves at Guy Wicks Field in Moscow.

Men’s soccer

The Whitworth Pirates outlasted the visiting Pacific Boxers 3-2 despite playing virtually the entire Northwest Conference match a man down and without their starting goalie.

The Pirates (5-1, 2-0) were forced to play with 10 players when the starting goalkeeper drew a red card for fouling a Pacific (1-5, 0-2) player inside the box at the 2:20 mark of the first half.

A Niko Varlamos header gave the Whits a 1-0 lead at 21:40. Jonathan Carlson stretched the advantage to 2-0 with a header at 42:01. Carlson added his second goal early in the second half to put Whitworth up 3-0.

Auto racing

Spokane’s Rick Schultz won his third NAPA Auto Parts Inland Northwest Late Model Series race of the season and second straight where he lead from the green to checkered flag Saturday night at Stateline Speedway.

Schultz finished just ahead of Kevin Richards who rode the winner’s bumper all night but couldn’t find a way past. Dan Garber was third and claimed enough points to be unofficially crowned series champion.

Hockey

The Spokane Braves skated to a 2-2 tie with visiting Nelson in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play.

Ryan Pajimola and Lief Sherman scored goals for the Braves. Spokane led until Branden Ogoloff’s game-tying goal at 4:41 in the third.
