Below are classes being offered to seniors (55-plus) by the Institute for Extended Learning Seniors Program starting in October. Please call 279-6025 to register or if you have questions.

Arts

Quilting - Corbin Senior Activity Center, 827 W. Cleveland Ave., Oct. 8, noon-5 p.m. Cost $17. Learn foundation piecing by practicing easy, moderate and difficult patterns. This class is for those who have had little or no experience with paper piecing. Supply list sent when student registers. Bring sewing machine to class. Patterns supplied. Space limited, so register early.

Ceramics - Hillyard Senior Center, 4001 N. Cook St., Tuesdays through Nov. 2, 9:30 a.m.-noon. This class is not age-restricted. Cost $29.

Communications

Book bunch (nonfiction) - Corbin Senior Activity Center, 827 W. Cleveland Ave., Tuesday , Oct. 26, and Nov. 30, 10 a.m.-noon. Cost $13. Enrich your connection with others as we discuss and explore the world of nonfiction. “Bold Spirit: Helga Estby’s Forgotten Walk across Victorian America” will be discussed in September; the class will choose the remaining books to be discussed.

Humanities

Roots of the blues - Corbin Senior Activity Center, 827 W. Cleveland Ave., Oct. 14-Dec. 9, Thursdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Cost $26. Trace the evolution of this uniquely American music from 19th century work songs and field hollers of the Mississippi delta to the guitar innovators of the postwar era. Explore the lives and careers of blues pioneers such as Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell and Tampa Red, as well as postwar urban blues stylists like Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker and John Lee Hooker. The course includes discussion, readings, audiovisual resources and instructor demonstrations.

Genealogy, leaving a legacy - Corbin Senior Activity Center, 827 W. Cleveland Ave., Sept 28, Tuesday, 10 a.m.-noon. Cost $10.

Computer kindergarten - Sullivan Square, 15412 E. Sprague Ave., Oct. 20-Nov. 3, Wednesdays, 1-4 p.m. Cost $26.

Computer kindergarten - Spokane Falls Community College, 3410 W. Fort George Wright Drive., Oct. 12-14, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 2:15-5:15 p.m. Cost $26.

Computer slide show (PowerPoint XP) - Sullivan Square, 15412 E. Sprague Ave., Tuesday-Oct. 21, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1-4 p.m. Cost $49.

Exercise

Arthritis exercise - Mid-City Senior Center, 1222 W. Second Ave., Oct. 4-Dec. 20, Mondays and Thursdays, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Cost $21.

Bridge

Bridge Intermediate - Corbin Senior Activity Center, 827 W. Cleveland Ave., Oct. 22-Dec. 3, Fridays, 1-3 p.m. Cost $28. All ages welcome.
