Athletics 1, Angels 0 (10): After Rich Harden and Jarrod Washburn dueled through eight scoreless innings, Nick Swisher scored from first base on reliever Scot Shields’ throwing error in the 10th inning of Oakland’s 1-0 victory over visiting Los Angeles on Saturday.

Orioles 7, Yankees 6: At Baltimore, Brian Roberts hit a three-run homer off Tom Gordon to cap a five-run seventh inning, and Baltimore rallied to beat slumping New York. The Orioles trailed 6-2 before sending eight batters to the plate in the seventh.

Twins 6, Indians 4: Lew Ford and Torii Hunter each hit three-run homers to help visiting Minnesota past Cleveland for its sixth straight win. Dave Gassner (1-0) worked six strong innings allowing three hits and two runs.

Red Sox 6, Devil Rays 2: At Boston, Manny Ramirez ended his longest homerless drought to start a season with a grand slam and a two-run shot, and Matt Clement won in his Fenway Park debut to lead Boston over Tampa Bay. Alex Gonzalez went 4 for 4 with a double and three singles for the Devil Rays.

Tigers 7, Royals 1: At Kansas City, Mo., Jeremy Bonderman rebounded from a rough start last week to shut down Kansas City for eight innings and help Detroit snap a five-game losing streak.

Blue Jays 8, Rangers 0: At Arlington, Texas, Blue Jays rookie Gustavo Chacin pitched eight shutout innings and Reed Johnson was hit by a record-tying three pitches – two with the bases loaded – in Toronto’s victory over Texas. Toronto’s Corey Koskie, while playing with Minnesota on July 27, 2004, was the last player hit three times in a game.

National League

Nationals 9, Diamondbacks 3: Vinny Castilla has yet to make an out at RFK Stadium, going 3 for 3 and driving in four runs for the second straight game to help Washington beat visiting Arizona. John Patterson (1-1) threw seven shutout innings, and the Nationals broke open a tight game by scoring seven runs in the seventh.

Phillies 2, Braves 1: At Philadelphia, Jon Lieber outdueled John Smoltz and Chase Utley had a tiebreaking RBI single and game-saving catch, leading Philadelphia over Atlanta.

Reds 3, Astros 2: At Cincinnati, left-hander Eric Milton finally pitched like a pricey and prized acquisition, leading Cincinnati to a victory that ended its 12-game losing streak against Houston.

Cardinals 5, Brewers 3: Scott Rolen snapped out of his early-season slump with a two-run homer and two singles, leading visiting St. Louis over Milwaukee.

Cubs 4, Pirates 3: At Pittsburgh, Neifi Perez doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh and Aramis Ramirez hit a three-run homer to carry Chicago past Pittsburgh, the slow-starting Cubs’ second victory in five games.

Rockies 5, Giants 4: At Denver, Joe Kennedy outpitched Jason Schmidt and had two hits to help Colorado end an eight-game losing streak with a victory over San Francisco.

Dodgers 8, Padres 3: Scott Erickson pitched six sharp innings for his first N.L. victory, Ricky Ledee homered and Jason Phillips had a pair of RBI singles in Los Angeles’ victory over visiting San Diego.
