City’s mission should be re-evaluated

The Spokesman-Review

I agree with the April 2 headline on a Front Porch written by Ed Mertens, “Volunteerism key to successful effort.” With the text I couldn’t disagree more.

The Valley has a long and proud tradition of volunteerism. The many churches, schools, fraternal organizations and service groups demonstrated the spirit of volunteerism in our community long before incorporation. The only reason there are no fire service volunteers is because the commissioners of District 1 won’t allow it.

The Spokane Valley Community Center, Meals on Wheels, SCOPE, SCRAPS and Valleyfest are just a few of the organizations that attract dedicated volunteers. All of these groups identified needs, formed and attracted volunteers before incorporation.

The city cannot attract volunteers with disrespect and arrogance. If the city is not attracting the support Mertens demands, perhaps he should re-evaluate the message and mission of the city. Vilifying dissenting citizens will not garner volunteers. The city is a Pandora’s box of new taxes, fees, ordinances and debt and contributes nothing worthwhile to the lives of its citizens.

I suggest we agree to disagree and see where volunteers put their efforts.
