Monday’s games

The Spokesman-Review

American League

Orioles 8, Red Sox 4: At Boston, B. J. Surhoff hit a two-run homer and Bruce Chen pitched effectively into the seventh inning, leading Baltimore over Boston. Brian Roberts went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a pair of stolen bases for the Orioles, winners of 12 of 17 games. David Wells (2-3) left with a sprained right foot in the fourth inning.

Tigers 6, Twins 4: At Detroit, Carlos Guillen and Dmitri Young homered, and the Tigers rallied for two runs in the seventh to beat Minnesota in a makeup for one of the two games postponed by snow last weekend. The Tigers had blown all seven save opportunities before Troy Percival struck out two of the three batters he faced. Detroit was the last team in the majors to record a save.

White Sox 6, Athletics 0: At Oakland, Calif., Jon Garland pitched a four-hitter for his second career shutout, and Chris Widger broke open a scoreless game in the seventh with a two-run homer in Chicago’s eighth straight victory, a win over Oakland.

National League

Pirates 2, Astros 0: At Pittsburgh, Oliver Perez allowed four hits over 7 2/3 mostly dominating innings, outpitching Roy Oswalt and leading Pittsburgh to only its second home victory by defeating Houston. Perez (1-2) didn’t give up a hit until two out in the sixth and struck out nine in his first productive start this season.

Mets 5, Braves 4: At New York, Mike Piazza broke out of a slump with three hits, Cliff Floyd and David Wright hit two-run homers, and New York came from behind to end Atlanta’s four-game winning streak. Aaron Heilman (2-2) allowed just two hits over seven innings and retired 15 straight batters but was trailing 1-0 when the Mets came to bat in the sixth against Horacio Ramirez (1-2).

Phillies 5, Nationals 4: At Washington, taking advantage of seven walks by Washington pitchers – plus two errors – Philadelphia built a four-run lead and held on to beat the Nationals to end a three-game losing streak. Billy Wagner got the last four outs for his 250th career save.

Cubs 10, Reds 6: At Chicago, Mark Prior struck out a season-high 10 in six strong innings and Neifi Perez hit a three-run homer and had four RBIs in Chicago’s win over Cincinnati. Prior (3-0) pitched six innings and gave up two runs on six hits and two walks.

Diamondbacks 4, Dodgers 2: At Los Angeles, Javier Vazquez pitched eight strong innings, Troy Glaus and Shawn Green got the key hits in a three-run first, and Arizona beat the Los Angeles for its fourth straight win.

Padres 5, Giants 3: At San Francisco, Geoff Blum had a two-run homer and a go-ahead single, and San Diego Padres ended a three-game losing streak with a victory over struggling San Francisco.

Brewers at Cardinals (ppd): At St. Louis, the St. Louis-Milwaukee game was postponed by rain. The game will be played Thursday afternoon.
