Hawks end drought, beat Indians
BOISE – The Boise Hawks hadn’t scored a run in 21 innings coming in. Elvin Puello put a stop to that.
Puello went 3 for 4 and scored two runs to lead Boise to a 4-3 Northwest League victory over the Spokane Indians Thursday night.
Puello singled leading off the second inning, went to second on Jake Muyco’s single, and, after a strikeout, scored on a single by Carlos Quinones, ending a 22-inning scoring drought spread over four games.
With the win, the Hawks (22-28) moved back into a tie for first-place in the East Division standings with Spokane (22-28).
The teams meet again tonight in the series finale, with each team holding a victory.
Boise made it 3-0 in the fourth inning and Puello was, again, the catalyst. Puello led off with a double, was sacrificed to third by Muyco, and scored on Brandon Taylor’s double to center field. After a Quinones single and a passed ball, Taylor scored on Jonathan Mota’s single.
Spokane answered in the sixth with Freddie Thon’s seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to left that scored German Duran.
Thon had entered the game to start the bottom of the fourth inning at first base after Phillip Hawke left the contest after being hit by a pitch in the top of the inning.
Boise extended its lead to 4-2 in the seventh inning on Kyle Reynolds’ RBI single.
Spokane scored one run in the top of the eighth inning on Thon’s RBI groundout, which brought in K.C. Herren.
Boise’s Davy Gregg stole his 31st base in the first inning.
