Hong Kong Cafe opening

Beijing duck is landing at a new Spokane Valley restaurant this week.

Hong Kong Cafe, at 14720 E. Sprague Ave., specializes in authentic Chinese food and is expected to open today.

“We try to do real Chinese food to make it a lot more different than other Chinese restaurants,” said Jenny Zhuo, who opened the business with her husband Yuwen Wang, a chef with more than 20 years experience cooking for eateries in China.

Wang, 45, and Zhuo, 46, immigrated from northern China in 1997, to be near family.

The Spokane Valley couple decided to open their own restaurant, doing extensive renovations to reconfigure the building’s interior to create comfortable seating for 86 people in what was once a fast food place.

“Everything is new. We don’t have any old stuff,” Zhuo said.

Menu items include Mu Shu, Beijing duck, Mongolian and Hunan beef, curry chicken, hot and spicy Szechuan beef and other dishes. Entrees run from $6.50 up to $9.

A full page of lunch specials at a cost of $4.99 each, are available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, and feature entrees such as almond chicken, Mongolian beef and sweet and sour pork. Each is served with an egg roll, white rice and egg drop soup.

Seven different soups are also offered by the cup or quart. Foods are prepared in vegetable oil with no MSG. Free delivery is available within a five-mile radius with a minimum order of $10 or more.

In addition to being a culinary arts graduate, Wang managed large hotels in China. He knows how to make plates look appealing, adding fun touches like radish flowers and handmade noodle baskets that look like peacocks, and are stuffed with seafood and vegetables.

“The food is tasty and the color is pretty. He makes it look good,” she said.

The restaurant is open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 4 to 9:30 p.m. For more information, call 921-6668.

Although she declined to be directly quoted on the pending deal, she said it’s about “about 75 percent there” and paperwork could be completed as early as next week.

Lundin’s Violins moves to Coeur d’Alene

After 34 years of doing business in Spokane Valley, Lundin’s Violins moved to Idaho.

Store owner Arvid Lundin moved the family business across the border to be closer to the Coeur d’Alene home he shares with his wife and 2-year-old twins.

“I’m just five minutes from home now,” Lundin said.

The new store, at 3202 N. Fourth Ave., opened two weeks ago. For more information, call (208) 665-7074.
