Relax, have fun decorating

Cheryl-Anne Millsap Cheryl-annem@spokesman.com

“Decorating with Funky Shui: How to Lighten Up, Loosen Up, and Have Fun Decorating Your Home,” opens with the line: “If Feng Shui is the art of arranging objects to promote harmony, then ‘Funky Shui’ is the art of arranging objects to make your home, and your life, fun.” And that’s it in a nutshell.

There’s nothing too serious in between the covers of this little book. Packed with color photos showing a patio table made from a surf board, a bedroom lamp trimmed with a feather boa, pink plastic flamingos and a collection of Shoney’s “Big Boy” dolls, the authors put fun first with cheery rules for decorating that include tchotchkes, bric-a-brac and collectibles.

Under “Color me Funky,” examples of serene color choices for a powder room are listed along with colors that should be “flushed.” Tasty kitchen colors are compared to those, such as Brussels sprout and Melba toast, which are unappetizing.

The message of the authors, who happen to be sisters, is simple: Seek “funlightenment.” And do it with style.
