Teresa’s View

Teresa McCallion Marketing Department Columnist

Some say the Torrent may be Pontiac’s first SUV. Others claim the first was the Aztek, a step off the design cliff that Pontiac called a sport recreation vehicle. But that’s not important right now. The all-new Torrent is here to replace the ill-fated Aztek.

Pontiac calls its new baby a crossover vehicle because of its car-like tendencies — think of it more as a foul-weather friend than backwoods buddy. In fact, the Torrent, unlike its twin, the Chevrolet Equinox, is being advertised as a “sporty utility” from GM’s “excitement” division. That may be a bit of an exaggeration.

It’s not an overstatement to say the Torrent is substantially better looking than the Aztek or the Equinox. It still features a bold design aesthetic. Nine exterior colors include Crystal Lake Green and Purple Haze Metallic. The faux front skid plate adds a bit of bling, especially when the rig is ordered in basic black. Despite the sport-ute’s reasonable price point — in the mid-$20Ks — upgraded plastics throughout the cabin blend nicely. The chrome rings surrounding the gauges are a tasteful touch. Thankfully, there isn’t a hint of plastic, fake wood trim.

The Torrent’s timing allowed Pontiac to take advantage of previous innovations in the evolving field of SUV design. A minivan-esque interior and sliding rear seats, which can be moved back for maximum passenger space or forward for increased cargo room, provide real practicality. Best of all, the cargo area includes an optional movable shelf that serves as a plastic floor mat, handy shelf, or, when removed, a table for tailgate parties.

Powered by a 185-horsepower, 3.4-liter V-6 engine, gas mileage for the Torrent is a modest 18 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway. On the plus side, it takes regular fuel.

What Is It?: The Torrent is a five-passenger sport-utility vehicle offered in front- and all-wheel drive variations. Technically a compact, that designation is somewhat deceiving. With an overall length of 188.8 inches, the Torrent is about the size of the midsize Toyota 4Runner.

Gadget Rating: 7.8 out of 10. The well-equipped Torrent includes air conditioning, CD player and power windows, mirrors and door locks. Most buttons and knobs are well placed, although an initial hunt is required to locate the window switches on the center console below the shifter. For safety, anti-lock brakes, daytime running lamps and remote keyless entry are standard. Side impact and curtain-style airbags and OnStar are offered as part of a $1,090 security package.

The Back Seat: Love the sliding seats, but I have a few gripes. The back seat is missing a center armrest, storage space is limited and ungainly dual cupholders unfold from the center console with difficulty. I don’t expect them to last long.

So, Where Are Ya From?: The Torrent is assembled in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada.

Cheat Sheet: Pontiac has been a member of the General Motors family since 1926.
