Mead captures team title at Deer Park

Philip Smith, Peter Edminster and Mike Magee all won their weight classes as Mead took the team title at the Deer Park Wrestling Invitational Saturday at Deer Park High School.

Smith won at the 112-pound weight class, Edminster at 125 and Magee at 275 to spark the Panthers to 163.5 team points, four ahead of second-place Hermiston, Ore. The Panthers also got second-place finishes from Ian Matson (119) and Derrick Denniston (275).

Medical Lake, which took third with 155.5 points, got a win from Justin Murry (119) and second-place finishes from Jessie Hardenbrook (130) and David Snyder (145).

Mt. Spokane took fourth with 150.5 points and got wins from Noah Hatton (145), Matt Schafer (189) and Bryce Malone (215).

•Daniel Swain, Eric Moody, Kevin Jared, Thomas Garcia and Brad Thew all scored wins to lead Newport to a team victory in the Davenport Invitational.

Swain beat Colfax’s Luther Nickels in the 112-pound weight class; Moody pinned Oroville’s Brant Woodruff at 119; Jared beat Oroville’s Kody Kramer at 145; Garcia beat Okanogan’s Jarret Edwards at 171; and Thew beat Davenport’s Zach Pebles at 275 as the Grizzlies finished with 157 team points, just four ahead of Colfax.

Colfax got wins from Drew Hall (103), Jeff Jordan (135) and Jake Shahan (152).

Davenport took fifth with 86.5 points and got wins from Matt Fisk (140), Cory Christman (189) and Tyler Dehn (215).

•East Valley was the only team that finished undefeated at the Divisional Duals at Lakeside (Nine Mile).

The Knights romped past Connell 82-0, beat Lakeside 41-32 and held off Warden 42-31.

Shadle Park finished 2-1, beating North Central 42-19 and Connell 60-15 while losing to Lakeside 57-18. The hosts also went 2-1, adding to the win over Shadle by beating Warden 52-23.

North Central – with a 61-18 win over Connell and losses to Shadle and Warden (42-18) – finished the day 1-2.

Cross country

Mt. Spokane’s Megan O’Reilly qualified for nationals with a third-place finish in the Foot Locker West Regional Championships at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

O’Reilly, the State 4A champion, finished the 3-mile course in 17 minutes and 52 seconds, 38 seconds behind Jordan Hasay of Arroyo Grande, Calif., who took first place. O’Reilly will run in the national race Saturday in San Diego.

Ferris’ Becky Mackelprang was the next-highest area finisher, taking 55th place overall (there were 13 high school races) with a time of 19:42.

On the boys’ side, East Valley’s Nick Atwood finished 39th in a time of 16:32. AJ Acosta of Oceanside, Calif., took first, finishing in 15:38.

•Taylor Nepon finished fifth as Mead’s boys were fourth in the team standings at the Nike Team Nationals at Portland Meadows in Portland.

Nepon finished the 5,000-meter course in 16:53.1. Kenny Klotz of Portland’s Central Catholic took first in 16:25.8. Mead finished with 176 team points. Saratoga took first with 111 team points. Ferris, led Robert Cosby (7th, 16:54.8), took 10th with 217.

Junior hockey

Leif Sherman and Sam Read each scored twice and Ryan Skier made 45 saves as the Spokane Braves (14-11-4-1) beat the Osoyoos Storm 4-3 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action at Planet Ice.
