Connecticut knocks off Minutemen

Rudy Gay had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 3 Connecticut to a 78-60 victory over Massachusetts on Thursday night in Hartford, Conn., the 108th meeting of the New England programs.

Josh Boone had 10 rebounds and scored all of his 13 points in the second half and Rashad Anderson added 15 points for the Huskies (7-0), who avoided consecutive losses to the Minutemen (2-2).

(11) Illinois 58, Georgetown 48: At Champaign, Ill., Dee Brown scored 16 points and Illinois’ defense made up for a poor shooting night as the Illini beat the Hoyas (3-2) to open the season with nine straight wins.

(19) George Washington 70, Florida International 45: At Washington, Pops Mensah-Bonsu had 15 points and eight rebounds in his best game since returning from suspension as the Colonials (6-0) beat FIU (3-3).

(24) Arizona 75, N. Arizona 66: At Tucson, Ariz., Hassan Adams scored 21 points and pulled down two of his eight rebounds in the final seconds as the Wildcats (3-3) beat the Lumberjacks (4-5).

Women’s Top 25

Ann Strother scored a season-high 24 points and had 10 rebounds, Renee Montgomery added 14 points and No. 8 Connecticut (7-1, 1-0 Big East) bounced back from its worst home loss in 21 years with a 72-56 win over Villanova (5-2, 0-1) in Villanova, Pa.

Lisa Karcic led the Wildcats (5-2, 0-1) with 14 points, and Jackie Adamschick had 13.

(7) North Carolina 87, Wofford 50: At Chapel Hill, N.C., La’Tangela Atkinson had 15 points and six assists as the Tar Heels (9-0) routed the Terriers (4-2) for their 24th straight home win. … (19) Texas 77, Stephen F. Austin 56: At Austin, Tiffany Jackson scored 19 points and Ashley Lindsey had 12 points and 13 rebounds in her first career start, leading the Longhorns (4-3) past Lumberjacks. … (21) Vanderbilt 57, Northern Arizona 41: At Nashville, Tenn., Liz Sherwood scored nine of her 13 points during a key stretch of the second half, leading the Commodores (7-2) past the Lumberjacks (5-2). … (22) UCLA 95, Pepperdine 56: At Los Angeles, Noelle Quinn scored 24 points and Lisa Willis added 20 as the Bruins (5-3) beat the Waves (1-6).

Magee wins No. 800

Philadelphia University’s Herb Magee got his 800th victory Thursday night when his Rams topped Wilmington College 95-68, making him the eighth coach in NCAA history to reach the milestone.

Magee, in his 39th year – all at Philadelphia – joined former North Carolina coach Dean Smith (879), former Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp (876), Texas Tech’s Bobby Knight (859) and four others on the list. Magee, 64, has an 800-310 career record.

•Kentucky’s Randolph Morris had his eligibility restored by the NCAA , but the center can’t play until next season.

Morris also must repay expenses related to tryouts for NBA teams, the NCAA said in a statement.

Morris will have two years of eligibility remaining after this year.
